Benefits

Mike Mohl

Was our first live-in to graduate at Allegany College with a degree in forestry. These are some questions that were presented to him and his response to them.

1. What have the benefits of our Live-in Program meant to you?

"This program has helped me in many ways.
One way is obviously financially. I was able to move out of a run-down apartment that sometimes lacked heat and warm water and move in to the fire hall, which is much nicer and I still saved $5,000 per year! The second benefit was academic.  Since I was living rent-free, I didn't have to work as many hours so I was able to study more and earn better grades, which lead to me receiving many scholarships. The Third and perhaps the best benefit has been training.  I have taken over 100 hours of firefighting and EMS training at the local MFRI training center in Cresaptown, either on weekends or after school.  The firehall paid for all of this training and even my books for the courses!  The last benefit is experience.  Our call volume is low enough to give you time to devote to schoolwork, but high enough to guarantee that you'll get some decent experience in a variety of emergency situations, which makes you a more responsible person."

2. How has this program benefitted your family?

"This program was very convenient for my family and me since it basically cut the cost of attending ACM (which is 4 hours away from home) in half.  My parents were glad that I had a safe place to live and proud of me for serving the community during my schooling."

"1. This program has helped me immensely. First it has helped me financially, I was able to move off campus from FSU which saved me around $5,000 a year. Secondly, it was a huge help academically. I was able to complete my homework and spend more time studying without the distractions of living in a dorm. Lastly, the best benefit for me was I got to expand my knowledge within the fire service as a live in member. I took many classes through MFRI, ranging from Structural Collapse Technician, to Emergency Vehicle Operator, and Firefighter II. The call volume at BRVFD may not be the biggest, but it gives you a great chance to complete all of your school work, and you know that if someone does call for you they really need your help as we don't run all the typical calls that many other areas do. This live in program has been very helpful to me, and I believe with the experience I obtained while here it will help me later in life as I move on from the program to start a career with the Baltimore County Fire Department.

2. This program benefited my family mainly financially. It helped them save money while sending me to get my four year degree. It also allowed me and my parents to come out of college with no debt. By living at BRVFD I didn't have to take any loans out, and could pay for each semester in full. My parents were also happy that I had a safe place to live, and knew that I would have a chance to do what I love, which is provide fire and EMS services to a community."
